I was about to go through and sanitize my kit from my last gig when I remembered that I needed to take pictures for insurance. Thought you guys might be interested in my working kit. If you're a make-up artist, what can't you live without in your kit? I wanna know. If you're a make-up junkie I still wanna know: what can't you live without. I know there are so many things that are amazing out there and if I missed something...I wanna hear about it!

Alva Rhassoul and Sandoorn Skincare Review

A couple of months back(!) I was sent a few items from the lovely people at Alva. The ladies recommended a product that would deal with my oily skin so I was looking forward to trying these products out. I don't often do skincare reviews but I've used these products long enough to give you an informed review.

Alva Rhassoul and Sandoorn Skincare Review

I won't give you the whole blurb about what Alva says about the products. Visit their website for further information. I've give you quick info and then my review.

The products I received were:-

Mineral Washcreme

Balancing Creme

Skin Oil

 Alva Rhassoul Mineral Creme

I got about a month and half usage out of this washcreme (it really should have been longer but keep reading). It's a volcanic mineral clay that looks grey-ish in colour and smells like clay. Nothing fong kong about it. I like how it felt and smelt so it was good for me. I used this every morning and some evenings and I can happily report that I actually really like this product. It wasn't a perfect ride to great skin though. For the first couple of days nothing really happened. It helped to dry out my skin a bit and I was happy with it.

Then wam bam thank you maam! BREAKOUTVILLE. In a major way. Madam rouge aka my peroid was no where in sight and so I figured it must have been the washcreme because I wasn't using anything else at the time. So I had to make a decision:- continue using it or just leave it alone. Being the african that I am (and not wanting to waste anything) thought, "Whatever. I'm gonna give this a chance." So off I went deep into breakoutville.

Looking back on this I think that this product was probably getting all the gunk out of my face anyway and hence why my skin broke out. After the second week my skin started to settle and things started to look good again. It was certainly worth holding out for.

Then I started to notice that my washcreme seemed to be reducing rather quickly. I was certain the bottle was full when I received it but for some reason the contents were starting to diminish.

*side note* My husband has got VERY oily skin. I look normal in comparison. If I'm wearing glasses and he kisses me I am guaranteed to have oily smudge marks all over my lenses.

I happened to make a comment to husband a couple of weeks later saying that his skin was looking rather radiant and less oiler and he sparked up and said, "Yeah man! It's that mud of yours in the bathroom. I've been using it and it works really well for my skin!"

So that's why the bottle was emptying rather quickly. I would have gotten a lot more out of that bottle had the brother not been using it with me all along. And he loves it. I reckon he's about to order the whole line after his current skinwash finishes. That's how well it worked for him.

Along with the washcreme we got the balancing creme as well.

 Rhassoul Balancing Crem

Now I started off using a decent amount of this balancing creme in the beginning. It worked really well to balance my skin out and keep it moisturised. However as the washcreme worked, I found my self getting a little less oily and therefore needing to use less of this. I have a good amount left. I just don't need as much for some reason. You do need to give this creme a good shake when you use it as it separates in the bottle but you only need a very small amount for it to be effective.

The third product that I received is the Sanddorn Skin oil. I love it. This is Bio Oil, but better. I wasn't sure what I was going to use it for when I first started but it's a multi-tasker in a tiny bottle that goes a VERY long way.

1. I had a bridal trial recently and this lady had normal/dry skin. I use creme foundations a lot in my work and sometimes I need something to just thin the foundation down on the face to give a more sheer coverage. I happened to have the skin oil lying around at the time and so I added a couple of drops to some water in a spray bottle and used it to sheer down her foundation. Worked like a dream. It helped to make her foundation look like skin and she was ever so chuffed with the result.

2. On an evening I'll wash my face before going to bed and massage a couple of drops of this into my skin. I really do believe that it has helped to brighten my complexion a little bit and I haven't used the whole bottle yet.

3. I've got a couple of stretch marks here and there. I decided to use some of this oil to massage into them. It's certainly made the skin more supple in those areas so I'll continue to use it for as long as it works!

Overall I was very happy with my Alva products. Zucherro and I will definitely be getting the Rhassoul skincare range for ourselves because it works for us. I say definitely give it a go. In my opinion it gives good results and its all natural which is a definite plus.

Be blessed lovelies xxx

Sho Sho.

Sho sho aka Shona is from Singapore. She's my first oriental model. And Praise God she allowed me to do her make-up. I learnt so much. It can be difficult to get differing eyeshapes where I live. So she was a very steep learning curve for me. I used Yaby foundations on her which work very well. Kryolan eyeshadow (which I LOVE) and some other random bits and pieces that I cannot remember at the moment. I like how it turned out. Forgot to take a before picture.

This was my second foray into Bridal hair. I think God is trying to tell me something because it keeps coming up. So I've decided to learn how to do "light hair" ie be able to do some decent Bridal hair styling if needed. Doesn't hurt to have the extra skill I guess.

Okay. I'm typing with one eye open. Let me know what think :) Na'Night!

Sigma Make-up Brushes: Are they worth it?

I took my sweet time reviewing the Complete Sigma Professional Brush set. The hype around these brushes on youtube has been unreal. It's been the same on beauty blogs. So many people love them. Certain youtube guru's touted these brushes as the next best thing since sliced bread aka just as good as if not better than MAC brushes.

Hmmm.

I disagree. A lot.  On so many points. These brushes are no where near as good as or even better than MAC brushes. I have a decent brush collection and there is no way you are going to convince me that these brushes are on par with MAC. Bull poop. Yes you read right. Bull Poop.

With that being said they aren't completely useless. However I wanna talk about the ones that didn't make it into my personal stash or freelance kit.

Forgot to add the SS252

  • The natural hair brushes shed. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM SHED!
  • The smell like dead goat. I know what dead goat smells like cause we used to slaughter them for parties back home. The smell is the same and it does not leave
  • The brushes are rather scratchy
  • The black haired ones bleed like a shot alien
  • They are useless at holding their shape ie. very flimsy

As I worked with these particular brushes I found myself increasing annoyed. They just were not doing what I wanted them to do. Eventually I stopped reaching for them in my brush roll and simply took them out. I'm not going to compare them to their MAC counterparts in terms of what they look like. I just expected these brushes to be very well made considering they are handmade. The quality does not match the claim.

All is not lost for Sigma though. The brushes I can live with are:

  • Eyeliner brush
  • Concealer brush
  • Foundation brush
  • Small angle brush
  • SS224 blending brush
  • SS275 Angled brush

Notice a trend? Bar two, they are all synthetic brushes. Now in my opinion, it is very difficult to mess up a sythentic brush like a foundation or concealer brush. So if these had turned out to be rubbish as well I would have been very unhappy. They aren't the best out there but they serve as great "extras" in my kit.

I only realised about 3 weeks into testing these brushes out that the eyeliner brush is not a lip brush. I automatically used it as a lip brush and have continued to do so. I never once saw it as a liner brush. So it will stay that way.The small angle brush is flimsy-ish but it works when needed. Not as firm as I would like but hey I can live with this one. I have a love hate relationship with the SS275. It's STUPIDLY flimsy but it's great for blending out concealer. Sheds the worst this one. So I hate but it but like it all in one go.

The one brush in this whole brush set that I find worth having is the SS224 blending brush. It is still a bit scratchy. And it sheds and bleeds as well. BUT this brush blends VERY WELL. And I love to blend. Sigma did right with this brush. If it didn't smell or bleed or shed I would love this brush 100%. It is the only brush that performs it's job excellently in this set. The rest are a bit meh.

So this post is probably useless because most of us in the blogosphere have bought what we wanted from Sigma, but I felt like telling you guys anyway.

The question remains: Are they worth it?

If you are starting out from scratch, kinda broke and want something cheap to learn with then maybe.

If you're a season make-up junkie, consider the synthetic brushes but definitely look into the SS224.

If you're a make-up artist possibly consider the SS224. That's the only brush that I believe will be worth your time in the end.
