MAC oh MAC...

Not long ago a really good friend of mine and I had an interesting dicussion about MAC. She's seen some of my FOTDs and asked what MAC products I had used. I, in turn, replied that I had not used any MAC [save for perhaps one FOTD]. Which she simply did not believe. Her line of reasoning was something along the lines of, "There ain't no way you didn't use MAC on your eyes, the colours are too bright...only MAC does that."

In a way it made me smile. There are a lot of people out there who think that MAC is the be all and end all of all make-up. I'll be honest with you guys. I totally disagree. I do think that MAC has some really good products and I will look to them first for make-up brushes when I can but in general when it comes to eyeshadow, primers, mascaras, powder and whatever else, there are other companies out there that do it much better for far cheaper and that suits me just fine.

Seymone [Reflections of your beauty] (Check her blog out!!!) brought it to my attention on her twitter this morning that a couple of days ago that Temptalia did a mini article on the backstage photographs of the MAC Colourcraft Collection. These pictures were actually taken from the MAC Facebook page. So they are offical. I went onto the facebook page to look at them myself. What I saw made me chuckle. The artist used for the Colourcraft shoot used BEN NYE. Yeah you heard. BEN NYE. Worse yet, the awesome Lumiere Palette [get it if you don't have it. It's amazing!]. Why Mac would allow these pictures to be made public is way beyond me...

I am aware that in the industry when promo shoots happen they don't necessarily use the make-up from the collection. But why would MAC with its Pro collection opt to used a brand such a Ben Nye? Could it be that they recognise that Ben Nye is an awesome brand? The promo image from ColourCraft is mint but it was obvious that the goods sold with it were not used to create that image in the first place. Further more they have a face chart on their website for that same promo picture that give the impression that the colours used are MAC ones. I don't get that. The responses to the articule are brillaint.

Check it out:- MAC Colour Craft Backstage photoshoot

My point is this:MAC is cool but if I can create a banging look with a better product that cost me less money then let it be. They certainly had no qualms about it. I'd love to know your thoughts on this prickly sucject! And if you know of companies that "do it better" Holla!!!!!

Going back to bed now :D

Stay Blessed

I read that article, and if I'm honest I'm not really bothered by it!

I think the main problem for some may be the fact that they a facechart where is say what MAC products to use.

It's interesting you mention Pro products, I wonder what the reasoning was behind not using them!

Oh myyy, why did they do that? I totally agree with you, in fact I'm more proud using non MAC products yet I could create the same effect. Thanks for bringing this out to our attention. Great post, Deborah!

@Patience I wonder why they didn't use Pro products to...

@Nanzy Glad you liked it. If you can create it for cheaper then go on with your bad self!!!

You are soo right, MAC is a great brand but it is not the be all and end all of make up... i cannot believe they used ben nye and are trying to pass it off as mac....no fair!! wow, thanks for the insight.

I think MAC is a good brand and especially love the Mineralize Skinfinish Natural powders. However MAC is expensive and there are brands just as good if not better with some of their products. Perhaps if money was no object I would stick to MAC, but in this economic climate I am willing to experiment with other brands.Beautyaddict08

OMG!! I saw those photos and thought to myself why would MAC allow them to be taken. I love MAC and Ben Nye but to see the two together being used on a MAC ad just reads false advertising to me.

@God's Child:- Girl I have to agree. using Ben Nye and trying to pass it off as their was rather dubious. They have more than enough bright colours from their collection to have done the promo shot with their own line.

@BeautyAddict08 It's good to experiment with other products. This climate has forced us beauty addicts and fashionistas to look elsewhere to get the same look for less.

@ Slvrlips False advertising is errrrrverywhere! It's a pity it has to come from some brands that don't need to falsely advertise don't you think?

MAC is only worth purchasing if you get a good discount. They are no longer all about the makeup. They are focused on how much they can get you to buy now. A lot of the products they have, you don't even really need.

I've never used MAC. I, honestly, can't justify spending what I see some other bloggers spend on their products. I think there are quality brands available that are affordable and that's what I choose to buy.

And I just checked out Ben Nye. I'm adding some of their foundation to my wish list. =]

@Kimmy I have to agree discount is the way to go. But getting that discount when you aren't trained is another story....I'm only preparing to get my MAC card now!

@Jheneal To be honest you don't need to use Mac. There are so many great brand out there that work just as well. And that Ben Nye palette is AMAZING!

I was so shocked when I saw those pictures the other day, its disapointing but I knew that the colours used could not have come from MAC or that Color Craft Collection. I love MAC for foundation, brushes and lip product but I just have 8 MAC eyeshadows, the other eyeshadows I use are great palettes from ebay and BarryM dazzledusts and other less expensive brands that work just as well.
Don't need to spent that much on Mac anymore :D

i'm not mad because mags do it all the time. to get so-n-so's look try all of these revlon or laura mercier's products... when i'm sure the artist used everything but. however, this is MAC's promo.. that seemed to be a HUGE over sight on their part!!! duh!

I'm not sure that it matters. I've just started using MAC myself and I like what I buy, which is usually eyeshadows and lip products (glosses, dazzleglasses, lipsticks). As for the MAC Look I checked it out, they used MAC colors it's just not that intense as in the photo shoot. Ben Nye is considered theatrical makeup and maybe that's why it was used to give a more theatrical/intensified look. Outside of makeup artists and hard core makeup fanatics not too many people are going to purchase those Ben Nye palettes for everyday looks. Most people aren't even going to do that one look. So to me it appears to be much ado about nothing.

I think we need to separate MAC the company from the fans of MAC. I see people bash or get upset with MAC because OTHERS are using or comparing MAC. MAC at the time it came out, from my understanding, brought something to the table no other brand had and in some ways it's the reason so many other brands, high and low end are NOW doing what they do.

In the end do and use what's in your heart and wallet to do. To me makeup is like beauty - do you and be happy with it. You don't need to put down someone else's beauty (or makeup product) down to feel good about yourself or what you use. That goes both ways, for high end or low end users. Personally I use what ever works for me and what I like.

Sorry Mrs. Jones, didn't mean to make this a soap box long post :O).
